Well my 2001 GPR1200 is up and running. I had a friend who is very familiar working on 2 cycle engines take on the project of rebuilding the carbs (he was able to completely rebuild my Kawasaski 550 from literally boxes of parts). When he took the carbs out he noticed (in his opion) that the diaphrams were in really good shape (soft, suple, no dry rot or cracks) the only weird thing was a gel like residue in the the carb assemblys. He also removed the the head to get the exhaust back on and re-used the head gasket (I grimaced when he told me) "It was a 3 layer and looked in really good shape" (in his defense he was trying to save me $). It also was evident the motor was in good shape because you can still see the crosshatch marks on the cylinder walls. Ran it for half an hour in the driveway, no leaks, runs fine.
Test day: Put it in the water, starts immediatally idles great for about 5 minutes. I get on go to pull away from the dock and blah...stop...won't restart with/without choke. Take the plugs out to see if they"re wet and they are...with water on # 1&2 cylinders. Curses! Head gasket. Get gaskets (can you believe the paper one costs as much as the head gasket!?) put it on, everything is great again so lets go for...
Test day 2 (yesterday)after launching and crawling for about 10 minutes(a long protected channel and yes the constable LOVES to write you up) and get on the throttle and WHOA!! like a screaming banshee this gets up and pulls to I think I saw 56 mph (couldn't read the gauge well with polarized lense and sun in my face) then after a minute or so I ease off the throttle and it stalls (uh-oh, this could be a long pull back with only an hour or so of daylight) won't start right away until I start easing the choke on. It stays running but not like before, tops I can go is 40mph (about as fast as my 550 was on a good day) I decide to head back and not take a chance (I'm worried if it ran lean). Bring it home wash it off and call it a day (skeeters are hungry at dusk here). Today I pull the plugs look good no white spots. Put it back together and go out for a...
Test Day 3 Put it in run for an hour or so hoping to clear something out but it is still sluggish and won't run at all if the choke is not halfway on. I play with choke position to find the optimum speed. I play with the fuel control valve thinking it may be starving of fuel, no change in performance(except when I idled around for a minute or so and got on the throttle there would be a moment of liveliness then it was gone. Other than the nozzle control REALLY reluctant to move everything seems to be working fine. So there is my long winded story, thanks for reading this far.
My question is to try and pinpoint the problem. Is it the diaprams fooling us into thinking they are good or is the accelarator pump not up to task, or is it reed valves or...??? I just want to go to the right logical place rather than playing new parts roulette. Thanks for your patience and replys.
